Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
– 1 Peter 2:10
As hostility toward Christians spread, the early church was losing heart. Suffering and persecution marked their lives. Questions arose; faith wavered.
Peter knew suffering, but Peter also knew Jesus. He had seen Him with his own eyes, walked and talked with Him, heard His teachings, and watched Him suffer. If there was anyone who could understand suffering and the call to steadfast faith, it was Peter. His letters are an encouragement to anyone facing hardships and trials, a reminder of what is true, and a guide to stand firm in faith no matter what.
Peter reminds them and us that we can be steadfast because our God is steadfast. And when we are, what awaits us in eternity is worth far more than anything this world has to offer.
